Calculus on a TI-84: how-to guides
10 guides for calculus on the TI-84 Plus CE, TI-84 Plus and TI-83 Plus. Each one shows the keys to press, step by step.
The guides
- Find the area under a curve: Graph the function, press 2nd CALC (above TRACE) and 7 for ∫f(x)dx, then type the lower limit, ENTER, the upper limit and ENTER.
- Work out a definite integral (TI-84 Plus CE): Press MATH and 9 for the ∫ template, type the lower limit, ▶, the upper limit, ▶, the function, ▶ and the variable, then ▶ and ENTER.
- Work out a definite integral on the home screen (TI-84 Plus): Press MATH and 9 for fnInt(, then type the function, the variable, the lower and upper limits with commas between, close the bracket and press ENTER.
- Find the slope at a point on a graph: Graph the function, press 2nd CALC (above TRACE) and 6 for dy/dx, type the X value (or move there with ◀ ▶) and press ENTER.
- Draw a tangent line on a graph: Graph the function, press 2nd DRAW (above PRGM) and 5 for Tangent(, type the X value (or move there with ◀ ▶) and press ENTER.
- Find the derivative at a point (TI-84 Plus CE): Press MATH and 8 for the d/dx template, type the variable, ▶, the function, ▶ and the X value, then ▶ and ENTER.
- Find the derivative at a point (TI-84 Plus): Press MATH and 8 for nDeriv(, then type the function, the variable and the X value with commas between, close the bracket and press ENTER.
- Estimate a limit with a table: Press 2nd TBLSET (above WINDOW), set Indpnt to Ask, then open 2nd TABLE and type X values closer and closer to the point, pressing ▼ before each new one.
- Add up a Riemann sum: Press 2nd LIST, ▶▶ to MATH and 5 for sum(, then 2nd LIST, ▶ to OPS and 5 for seq(: its form asks for Expr, Variable, start, end and step (X²*.5, X, 0, 1.5, .5), and Paste puts it after sum(.
- Work out a Riemann sum (TI-83 Plus): Press 2nd LIST (above STAT), ▶▶ to MATH and 5 for sum(, then 2nd LIST, ▶ to OPS and 5 for seq(.
