How to convert a complex number to polar form on a TI-89 Titanium

Type the complex number (2nd CATALOG is ί), press 2nd MODE for ▶, type Polar and press ENTER: in degree mode (3.+4.ί)▶Polar gives (5.∠53.1301), length 5 at 53.13°.

Before you start

Set Angle to DEGREE in MODE first.

Step by step

  1. Type (3.+4.ί). ( 3 . + 4 . 2nd CATALOG ) Type (3.+4., then 2nd CATALOG for ί (the square root of -1) and ). The decimal points ask for a decimal answer.
  2. Type ▶ (convert). 2nd MODE Press 2nd, then MODE. ▶ is written above MODE; it means show this as.
  3. Type Polar. 2nd ALPHA STO→ − 4 = 2 ALPHA Press 2nd ALPHA to lock letters, type p o l a r (STO→ − 4 = 2), then ALPHA to unlock.
  4. Convert it. ENTER Press ENTER.
  5. Read length and angle. (5.∠53.1301): 3+4ί is 5 long at 53.13° from the real axis. In radian mode the same line gives the ℯ^(ί·θ) form.
