How to convert a complex number to polar form on a TI-84 Plus CE, TI-84 Plus or TI-83 Plus

By E-Code · updated

Type the complex number (2nd . types i), press MATH, ▶ twice to the complex tab and 7 for ►Polar, then ENTER. 3+4i►Polar gives 5e^(.927i): a size of 5 at an angle of .927 radians.

Step by step

  1. Type 3 + 4i. 3 + 4 2nd . An impedance of 3 + 4i Ω: type 3 + 4, then 2nd and . (the decimal point) for i. Complex numbers can be typed in any mode.
  2. Open MATH. MATH Press MATH.
  3. The complex tab. ▶ ▶ Press ▶ twice to the complex tab: CMPLX on the CE, CPX on older models.
  4. Pick ►Polar. 7 Press 7 for ►Polar. It goes at the end of the line and shows the answer as a size and an angle.
  5. Convert it. ENTER Press ENTER.
  6. Size and angle. 5e^(.927i): the size is 5 Ω and the angle .927 radians (53.13° in Degree mode). ►Rect, item 6, turns it back into a + bi.

What the screen shows

5e^(.927i): the size is 5 Ω and the angle .927 radians (53.13° in Degree mode). ►Rect, item 6, turns it back into a + bi.

Look for 5𝑒^(.927 on the screen.
