How to do a hypothesis test for a mean on a TI-84 Plus CE, TI-84 Plus or TI-83 Plus

Press STAT, ▶ twice to TESTS and 2 for T-Test. Pick Stats (▶, ENTER), ▼ and type μ0, x̄, Sx and n with ENTER after each, choose ≠, < or > μ0, then ENTER on Calculate: t and the p-value are shown.

Step by step

  1. Open STAT. STAT Press STAT.
  2. The TESTS tab. ▶ ▶ Press ▶ twice to TESTS.
  3. Pick T-Test. 2 Press 2 for T-Test: is the true mean different from a claimed one?
  4. Move to Stats. ▶ Press ▶ onto Stats: you'll type the sample's summary instead of a list.
  5. Pick Stats. ENTER Press ENTER. The rows change to x̄, Sx and n.
  6. The claimed mean μ0. ▼ 1 8 ENTER Press ▼, then type 18 and ENTER: the claim you test, say an average of 18.
  7. Your sample. 2 0 ENTER 4 ENTER 1 6 ENTER Type 20 ENTER, 4 ENTER, 16 ENTER: the sample mean x̄, its SD Sx and its size n.
  8. Keep ≠μ0. ENTER Press ENTER to keep ≠μ0: you test for any difference, higher or lower.
  9. Go down to Calculate. ▼ Press ▼ to Calculate.
  10. Calculate. ENTER Press ENTER.
  11. Read t and p. t = 2 and p = .064. p is above .05, so at the 5% level the sample isn't strong enough evidence that the mean differs from 18.
