Rocket launch, step by step — a TI-89 Titanium program

By E-Code · updated

LAUNCH89 is a TI-89 BASIC program for the TI-89 Titanium. Exhaust speed, liftoff and burnout mass and burn time, flying straight up with constant g and no drag. Step by step: the burn rate, thrust-to-weight (liftoff or not), the ideal Δv from the rocket equation, burnout speed and height (each checked by the algebra system integrating the motion), the coast, the maximum height and whether it reaches space.

What it asks for and what it shows

It asks for 4 values at its prompts. In the example below it shows R kg/s, T/W, Δv m/s, V m/s, ∫ check m/s, H m, ∫ check m, C m, MAX=H+C m, V burnout m/s, H burnout m, MAX m, LIFTOFF: T/W>1, ABOVE THE KARMAN LINE:, SPACE!, 7 SUMMARY.

Example run

One of its oracle test cases. The inputs are typed in order, and the results are the values the case expects on the screen.

How it's checked

4 test cases, each checked against an independent method. Replayed key by key on a virtual TI-89 Titanium, they make 59 checks.
