How to split a fraction into partial fractions on a TI-89 Titanium

Press F2 3 for expand(, type the fraction with brackets round its top and bottom, close with ) and press ENTER: expand((2x+1)/(x^2+x)) gives 1/(x+1)+1/x.

Step by step

  1. Pick expand(. F2 3 Press F2 for Algebra, then 3 for expand(.
  2. Type the fraction. ( 2 X + 1 ) ÷ ( X ^ 2 + X ) ) Type (2x+1)/(x^2+x) and ). Brackets round the top and the bottom keep each one whole.
  3. Split it. ENTER Press ENTER. On a fraction, expand( splits it into partial fractions.
  4. Read the pieces. 1/(x+1) + 1/x: two simple fractions that add up to the one you typed. comDenom( (F2 6) joins them again.
