How to find a Taylor polynomial on a TI-89 Titanium

By E-Code · updated

Press F3 (Calc) and 9 for taylor(, type the function, the variable and the order, close with ) and press ENTER: taylor(ℯ^(x),x,3) gives x^3/6+x^2/2+x+1 (◆ X types ℯ^().

Step by step

  1. Pick taylor(. F3 9 Press F3 for Calc, then 9 for taylor(.
  2. Type ℯ^x, x and 3. ◆ X X ) , X , 3 ) Press ◆ X for ℯ^(, type x and ), then x, 3 and ). The 3 is the order: the highest power in the answer.
  3. Build the polynomial. ENTER Press ENTER.
  4. Read the polynomial. 1 + x + x²/2 + x³/6 is close to ℯ^x near x = 0. Add a 4th argument to expand around another point.

What the screen shows

1 + x + x²/2 + x³/6 is close to ℯ^x near x = 0. Add a 4th argument to expand around another point.

Look for x^3/6+x^2/2+x+1 on the screen.
