How to keep going from the last answer on a TI-84 Plus CE, TI-84 Plus or TI-83 Plus

Start a new line with +, −, × or ÷ and the calculator writes Ans, the last answer, in front of it: after 5×4 = 20, pressing − 6 ENTER works out Ans−6 = 14.

Step by step

  1. Work something out. 5 × 4 Type 5 × 4.
  2. Get the answer. ENTER Press ENTER. The answer, 20, is kept in Ans, the last answer.
  3. Start with −. − On the new line press − first. The calculator writes Ans− for you: it carries on from 20.
  4. Finish the line. 6 Type 6.
  5. Get the answer. ENTER Press ENTER. Ans − 6 is 20 − 6.
  6. A running total. 14. Keep starting lines with + − × ÷ to work through a long sum one step at a time, without retyping an answer.
