How to store a number in a letter on a TI-84 Plus CE, TI-84 Plus or TI-83 Plus

Type the number, press STO→, then ALPHA and a letter (ALPHA MATH is A) and ENTER. The letter keeps the number, so A×2 then uses it in any sum.

Step by step

  1. Type the number. 9 . 8 Type 9.8, the pull of gravity in m/s².
  2. Press STO→. STO→ Press STO→. It writes →: the number goes into whatever letter comes next.
  3. Pick the letter A. ALPHA MATH Press ALPHA, then MATH. A is written above MATH, in the ALPHA colour.
  4. Store it. ENTER Press ENTER. 9.8 is now kept in A, even after you turn the calculator off.
  5. Use the letter. ALPHA MATH Press ALPHA, then MATH to type A.
  6. Double it. × 2 Press × then 2.
  7. Get the answer. ENTER Press ENTER. The calculator uses the 9.8 stored in A.
  8. Letters remember numbers. A × 2 = 19.6. Store a long number once, then type one letter instead of it in any sum.
